The Rate Reality

Why Pittsburgh Pays More For Power Than Anywhere Else In Pennsylvania

Three things are true at once here: the highest electric rate of any major PA utility, full retail-rate net metering, and a lot more cloud cover than most solar markets. Here’s how they net out.

Highest Rates In The State

Duquesne Light’s Price to Compare jumped 10.6% in December 2025 and another 2.8% in June 2026, driven by PJM capacity auction costs that rose over 800% since 2024. Pittsburgh’s all-in residential rate, near 23 cents per kWh, is now the highest of any major PA utility.

Net Metering Still Pays Full Retail

Despite Duquesne’s proposed changes, Pennsylvania’s PUC-protected framework keeps the 1:1 retail credit intact for solar customers statewide. Surplus production rolls onto your bill as a credit, not a discount, the same day it’s generated.

A Cloudier City That Still Produces

Pittsburgh is ranked the cloudiest major U.S. city by annual sunshine hours, but panels use diffuse light, not just direct sun. NREL data puts usable output at around 4.3 peak sun hours a day — enough for a correctly sized system to pencil out.

The Payoff

Does Solar Actually Make Sense Under All That Cloud Cover?

For most Pittsburgh homes, yes, and the region’s rate trajectory makes the case stronger every year. PJM’s capacity auction, the main driver behind Duquesne’s recent increases, is pinned at its regulatory cap through at least 2028, so further hikes are effectively already scheduled. A system sized against your last 12 months of actual Duquesne Light usage can absorb a meaningful share of that increase before it reaches your bill, and Pennsylvania’s SREC market adds income most neighboring states don’t offer at all.

Pittsburgh’s hilly terrain and dense tree canopy mean shading varies block by block, sometimes house by house. That’s why NEDES runs a full shade study before designing any system here, hillside or flat. On the environmental side, Pennsylvania’s grid still leans heavily on natural gas and coal-adjacent generation, so a typical Pittsburgh rooftop system avoids roughly 7 to 9 tons of CO2 a year.

What We Build

Solar Services From Pittsburgh’s Own Installer

Residential Solar Installation

Systems sized to Pittsburgh's real housing stock — steep-roofed hillside homes in Mount Washington, older brick rowhouses on the South Side, larger lots in Squirrel Hill. We run a full shade study before any layout goes to permit.

Learn More

Commercial Solar Installation

Rooftop or ground-mount systems for warehouses, offices, and light-industrial sites, sized so they don't overload existing electrical service. Many qualify for the federal Energy Community bonus credit on top of standard depreciation.

Learn More

EV Charger Installation

NEC 625-compliant circuits installed alongside your solar system or on their own. Older Pittsburgh homes with legacy electrical service often need a load calculation before anything else.

Learn More

Lightning Rod & Grounding

We install lightning rods, smoke detectors, and grounding systems alongside your array, or upgrade your inverter and add panels to match your current Duquesne Light usage.

Learn More

System Add-On (Panels/Inverters)

Already have solar? Adding panels or upgrading your inverter raises output without a full replacement. We verify your existing equipment's warranty terms before integrating anything new.

Learn More

Unmount/Remount (Roof Repair)

Pittsburgh's housing stock skews old, and a roof needing repair under an existing array is a routine call here. We unmount the panels, let the roofer work, then reinstall to spec.

Transparent Pricing

Transparent, itemized quotes: equipment, labor, PLI permits, electrical permits, and applicable incentive savings broken out line by line, before you sign anything.

What’s Actually On The Table

The Real Incentives Pittsburgh Property Owners Can Use

Duquesne Light Net Metering, Still Full Retail

Duquesne Light credits surplus solar production at the full retail rate, one-to-one, under Pennsylvania’s Alternative Energy Portfolio Standards Act. Residential systems up to 50 kW qualify. With Duquesne’s rate now the highest of any major PA utility, every credited kWh is worth more here than almost anywhere else in the state.

No City Rebate, But Federal Credits Still Reach Businesses

Unlike Philadelphia, Pittsburgh doesn’t run its own residential solar rebate program. For commercial properties, though, many Allegheny County ZIP codes qualify for the federal Energy Community bonus credit under Section 48E, on top of standard MACRS depreciation.

Pennsylvania SREC Income, Same Market Statewide

Every 1,000 kWh your Pittsburgh system produces earns one SREC under the AEPS Act, tracked through PJM-GATS. Current prices run $25–$45 per certificate. An 8 kW system generating roughly 10,000 kWh a year earns approximately $250–$450 annually, on top of Duquesne Light bill savings.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Thorough, professional and competitive!

Nedes LLC submitted a PV solar proposal that was immediately among the best that we received. My contact was Ahmad, I had loads of questions for him, he was courteous, and explained everything very clearly and thoroughly.

The included Align Solar Protection was incredibly important for us. In total we received 9 quotes from a combination of local and Energy Sage installers ... we selected Nedes LLC, and we're super happy we did!! I had specific goals and requests for our system, and the team at Nedes LLC explained, made adjustments and then exceeded my expectations every step of the way.

Mike continues to be our project manager and he's been responsive, thoughtful, professional and friendly. Installers were professional, efficient, considerate and precise. Our PV system functions perfectly and it is a thing of beauty too!

In addition to the system setup and installation, Mike made sure all post-installation steps were easy and completed accurately. SREC registration with automatic system reporting (effortlessly get paid for the energy you make). Align Solar Protection Lifetime System Function and Production Insurance.

This PV system is a big investment in our future. Our goal for our home is NetZero both for environmental and personal financial reasons. Thanks to Nedes, my wife and I will completely power our home and our mobility (EV car and eBikes) with the sun! Our Appalachian Power Bill will be the rock bottom minimum for the rest of our lives (currently $8.86 per month - and that includes, heat, AC, all appliances, lights, electronics, vehicles, water heating ... everything).

If you're in the Nedes LLC service area definitely let them create a quote for you. You'll be glad you did! And if you're at all on the fence about going solar, check out Bill McKibben's new book "Here Comes the Sun". Thank you Ahmad, Mike and the whole Nedes LLC team. Super highly recommended!!

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Nedes has just completed the installation of my solar panels and getting my home running on solar every thing went smoothly and just as explained . Mike Brown the project manager kept me informed throughout the whole project. He took time to explain everything ,regarding the permits that were required and the inspections. Everything was done on time as he said it would be. The installers were efficient and kept me informed as to what they were doing. They did a excellent job of keeping the work site safe and clean. Most important there were no unexpected increases . They did what they said they would and at the price quoted.
I would highly recommend them to family and friends

Mike managed the project very well; he communicated promptly during each step and kept was aware of what to expect next after each step/phase. There were some hiccups due to demand, but Mike kept us updated with the latest information. In general, well managed project and highly recommend.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Offered better pricing; however did not do proper installation. My range started tripping the circuit breaker after installation and when I told them about this, it was dismissed. After months of trouble, I brought a certified electrician and he concluded that nothing is wrong with my range or its connection. And when he turned off the solar power, it wasn’t tripping anymore. So, I called NEDES again and told about it. Their response was “oh that happens sometimes” they came and fixed it but it was after all of my troubles.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I worked with about 6 companies for solar quotes and came very close to pulling to trigger but decided against it for some reasons specific to our project. I worked with Ahmad and he was amongst the best/most helpful to work with across each of the companies! I had a great experience with him and their willingness to work with me on certain things that other installers simply refused related to some electrical and roofing needs. Thanks for the great experience!

Special thanks to Mike, the project manager, who went above and beyond to make sure every detail was taken care of. He was always responsive, clear in his communication, and ensured the project was completed on time and with outstanding quality.

I am extremely satisfied with the results and highly recommend Nedes and Mike to anyone considering solar installation. Their customer service and attention to detail truly exceeded my expectations.

Pittsburgh Solar Questions, Answered

Does solar actually work in such a cloudy city?

Yes. Panels use diffuse light, not just direct sun, and Pittsburgh still averages about 4.3 peak sun hours a day. Combined with some of the highest electric rates in Pennsylvania, the payback math holds up better than most people expect.

How long does the process take, from signing to flipping the switch?

Most residential projects take 1–3 months from signing to activation, covering design, PLI’s Building & Development Application, Duquesne interconnection review, and installation. Historic districts or larger systems can run longer.

Do I need a new roof before going solar?

Not always. We inspect roof condition during your consultation and flag anything close to replacement upfront, so you’re not paying to unmount panels a year later.

Will solar work during a power outage?

Grid-tied solar shuts off automatically when Duquesne Light’s power drops, for safety. A Tesla Powerwall keeps essential circuits running during an outage, sized to your home’s actual needs.

What size system do I actually need?

It depends on your roof, orientation, hillside shading, and last 12 months of Duquesne Light usage. Most Pittsburgh homes land in the 7–9 kW range, though steep or shaded roofs sometimes need creative panel placement.
